We bring you the top 10 fashion trends for the upcoming season.
The black and white trend never goes out of season, and this year it’s all about prints, geometrics and stripes. Pairing a statement monochrome print with a colour block is an easy way to be in fashion without too much effort. Be sure you don’t overdo this look, as adding too much print to a look can become very busy. Black and white suits every skin tone, and this trend is great for all ages and all body types, as it allows you to emphasise your best assets. For a sophisticated look, match your patterned piece with a solid black or white piece, and add one colour accent. Red lips pop with black and white, but you could also add a vibrant colour pop in the form of jewellery, a handbag or even bright shoes. This trend is versatile and is likely to stick around not only for the next season, but for the rest of this year, so stock up on those statement prints.
Navy and blue tones have been the top trends throughout red carpet season, and this colour trend is sticking around as we go into the next season. Sophisticated and with a slight parisian vibe, this cool tone is easy to match with the rest of your wardrobe. Pair with white for an elegant chic look or mix up different shades of blue to really play up this colour. Satins and silks add a chic shine to navy looks and can make them look expensive and royal. Great for lighter skin tones, match your look with smoky eyes with navy shades and a nude or baby pink lip to pull the look together.
Transparent clothing and sheer cut outs were big last season and are equally as popular this season. Mesh, chiffon and lace cut outs are great to put emphasis on your best features while still being covered up. Be warned that this isn’t the warmest trend for going into colder months, but it’s great for layering and perfect for weather between seasons. Keep it classy with black, navy or white sheer fabrics and make sure to accessorise well to avoid the lingerie look. For sheer tops, make sure you match your undergarments to your colour of choice to ensure that this doesn’t become a tacky look.
Fashion week was all about the halter neck this year spanning through tops and dresses. Halters are great to emphasize your shoulders and collar bones. Be mindful of sunburnt shoulders and ensure you have a haltered or strapless bra when wearing this style. The fitting is also important - too big and it will swim on you and appear shapeless, too tight and it will hug your figure in all the wrong places. Pair with maxi skirts and a fedora for a high fashion look that’s easy and comfortable. If you’re wearing a halter with a crossover cutout, make sure you pair it with something sophisticated and modest so that you only draw attention to your top half and keep the look classy.
Every year it seems that an older trend makes a return, whether it be a certain clothing item, a vibe from an era or a full style that becomes timeless. This year, it’s all about the 70’s vibe. Look out for organic colour palettes, the return of culottes, kimono style printed shrugs, and blousy tops matched with dress pants.
Kim Kardashian and Jared Leto have already bought this trend in, but the lighter locks are going to be very on trend this season. For natural blondes, silver or white tones are going to become huge. If you have darker hair, adding honey and blonde highlights can update your look and give you an overall lighter look. If you’re bleaching your hair out, consult your hairdresser first to ensure that you don’t damage your hair and that you are using the right conditioning treatments to prevent your hair from drying out and snapping. If you already have blonde hair, try running a silver toner or purple conditioner through your hair to give your hair a quick update.
The classic trench is another timeless look that is a great staple to your wardrobe. Look for neutral colour palettes so that you can wear it all year round. Long coats with subtle detailing are very on trend and there are endless possibilities of how you can wear a coat and keep it high fashion. If you’re doing a wardrobe overhaul, buy one or two statement coats and match your handbag and sunglasses to the colour scheme to ensure that you always look sophisticated.
Slicked back hair is an easy hairstyle that takes minimum effort and can work for almost any length of hair or colour. Invest in some hair serum or gel, take the top section of your hair and slick back to hide your natural hair line. Keep the ends dry to prevent your hair from appearing oily. You can also finish with some hairspray to really hold this style in place. Add your favourite earrings when wearing this style for added glamour.
THE CHUNKY HEEL
Lipstick heels were big over the past few months, and the chunky heel isn’t going away. As well as being easy to walk in, chunky heeled boots or heels are versatile and seasonal. Look for scrappy detailing or styles with a print for something different. Avoid heavy buckles to prevent them looking dated. Detailed heels will also up your fashion game.
As much as playsuits were a trend last season, the longer jumpsuit trend is back. Take note of different styles of jumpsuits and make sure that the drape and style suits your body shape. Block colours paired with heels can really dress this look up, whereas printed jumpsuits if not styled right can be mistaken as pajamas. Add a belt to give this baggy style shape, and accessorise with a jacket or blazer.
We hope these tips help you style your next season wardrobe.
